By TruAim
I've been a supporter of Wellco Boots for years, have owned 7 pairs of their boots, and by and large have liked the pairs I've owned. Most of my Vietnam-style Wellco Jungle boots are worn out and beaten after years of wear, so I thought I would "upgrade" and bought a pair of their Generation II Jungle Boots. Overall, I like the design/concept, I like what they're going for. With the Gen II's up-turned toe and thick Vibram sole which wraps unusually high up around the base of the boot, the boots are reminiscent of duck hunter boots. The boot looks like a hybrid between duck hunter boots, Modern SWAT boots and the old traditional jungle boots of the Vietnam era; the boots a cool modernistic take on that unusual merging of three fairly different boot styles. Putting the boots on, they felt very comfortable for sure. And wearing them around for a few days that comfort increased. But here was the big problem I had with the boots from the moment I laced them up: My ankles are average size, certainly not too skinny in any way. I wear a size 10.5 R and traditional jungle boots have always laced up extremely snug around my ankles. But with the Gen II Jungle Boots, I cinched the laces up as tightly as they would go, all the way until all the speed lace eyelets were touching each other and could tighten no more, and the upper portion of the boot didn't even come close to fitting snuggly around my ankles. In fact, I can easily stick three fingers at once down the inside of the boot. Fully laced up, the boots are so loose around my ankles that there is virtually no ankle support. It's a very disappointing drawback to what otherwise seems in every regard to be an excellent boot. Either Wellco needs to decrease the size of the circumference of the material around the ankle area, or they need to widen the horizontal gap between the speed lace eyelets so the laces have more room to tighten and cinch snuggly around the wearer's ankles. Either one of those design fixes will be easy to do and will fix the problem. Once Wellco makes that correction and fixes the "loose ankle" problem, they will have a fantastic boot with this model. Hopefully enough people who've bought these boots will complain about this defect and it will be fixed by Wellco sooner rather than later. Bottom line is, unless you have incredibly thick ankles, you might want to call Wellco directly and ensure this "loose ankle" problem has been corrected and you will get a pair of boots that fit snuggly around your "normal size" ankles. Because I honestly don't want anyone, especially guys in the service, to spend $140 on a pair of boots that provide no ankle support. Again, that's the only drawback I can see with these boots, but it's a huge drawback.
