5most durable work boot I've ever owned.
By Mark's Amazon
I LOVE THESE!
I have owned 6 pair of the Sledge boots with the Michelin Exalto sole. They are very comfortable and don't need break in time. I prefer the external metatarsal guard and the 6" upper. This "high" boot is the 8" upper.

The sole wears great and will never crack, even after 5 years or more. The external metatarsal guard keeps dirt and sparks out of the laces too. These boots have the longest lasting sole I've ever had. The leather is great too and I never oiled them and they last a long time. I didn't oil/wax them because I got them at work from the shoe truck and got them really dirty. I recommend oiling/waxing them before wearing and they will be even better.

I just wish they came with Gore Tex and they would be the ultimate boot.

WORK:
I used to work in the steel manufacturing industry for Nucor Steel. Even after one year of heavy use in dirt, steel dust, grease, sparks, cutting, welding, mud, snow, and a lot of standing, walking, running, shuffling, etc, that is very heavy use, I had not worn out the soles but just bought a new pair with the boot allowance year after year and kept the old boots.

PLACE OF PURCHASE:
I bought mine from the shoe truck and usually had to put my name on a waiting list since the truck store was always out of stock because of the demand! My first pair was only $110 in 1996, my last pair purchased was about $130 in 2011.

LONG TERM USE:
See my pictures.
You'll definitely get your $ worth. In 2013, I still have not worn out a pair. I still own and use 4 pair of my old boots for other work and personal use, sometimes hiking. I gave 2 pair out of 6 away just because I had so many usable pairs left over.

The leather is good and lasts too. I have one boot which got a 1/2" cut in the side by a razor Sharp piece of steel when I stepped against it. No boot can withstand that. I shoe gooed the hole just fine. Shoe Goo is awesome!

The tarsal guard leather will eventually crack a little bit on the sides by the stitching on the toe because how it is mounted to the shoe, but only maybe after 1+ yrs of use and in no way affects the safety or functionality of the boot. Compare that length of time with any other similar type of boot. Some OTHER brands only have a small hinge on the tarsal guards and even they break after like 6 months +/-. After a few years use and continued cracking on the sides of the tarsal guard leather I decided to cut off the tarsal guard on top of the toe like any other boot and shoe gooed the new seam together and they look like they came that way and still have that 2nd layer of toe protection. See my pictures.

The shoe lace eyelets on the tarsal guard will wear out in 6 months and will cut through heavy laces like every 2 weeks. Most people at work were cheap just used company wire ties to hold the tarsal guard to the laces on the boot, which works. I found a makeshift shoe lace that lasts 1+ years with the sharply worn eyelets. Best laces ever!

OTHER STYLE MICHELINS:
I bought one pair of the internal meta tarsal guard Michelin Exalto. They are very stiff and took at least 2+ months to break in, they squeak or sort make a quack sound when I walk and they just are not near as comfortable as the Sledge was even brand new. I don't remeber the Sledge model squeaking, and it usually does not matter when you work in noisy environments so I don't feel its an issue. One reviewer said it's the inner sole because it has a plastic base and you could just replace the sole if it bothers you. Still worth buying the best boot ever!
